If you’re looking for something to do on Saturday, September 13th between the hours of 2:00 and 10:00, check out Rock’n’Register at Harford Community College. It’s an all-ages battle of the bands show, costs $6 in advance and $8 at the door (all money after cost goes to a local non-profit), and you’ll get to hear some good local music. Plus you can vote for your favorite band, as well as for the non-profit that should receive the money, on a voting machine from the Harford County Board of Elections. There will be political organizations, candidates, and an opportunity to register to vote. Click here for more information.

BBQ Bash experience
Posted by Annie on September 15, 2007
I am posting this on behalf of Harford Hon:
This year I attended the Bel Air BBQ Bash. As I walked past a couple of the Republican venues I was taken aback by the vitriol directed against the Democratic Party and individual Democrats. Days after the BBQ event is over, I am still trying to sort out some of the misinformation that the Republicans gave to anyone who would stop and listen. I stopped to listen to a man explain how this current governor has tripled the tax rate for all the people in Maryland. Funny, I recall the Governor’s budget being balanced without a tax increase in any area. I was further told that the budget deficit was O’Malley’s fault. So the questions I asked were: Haven’t we had a structural budget deficit for about six years? Why didn’t the last governor (a Republican) do something about the deficit if the Republicans are now so concerned with the budget shortfall? With that question the man shouted that O’Malley promised to fix the problem and it should have been done by now.
As I walked away from this bitter and angry man I thought of the words of Confucius: “Strong and bitter words indicate a weak cause.”

Harford County Council vs. General Assembly Delegation?
Posted by Annie on June 3, 2007
Here’s an interesting article from the Baltimore Sun, June 3rd:
Often at odds, County Council and state delegation to meet
They have sparred in the local press and traded jabs from their respective offices.
Now members of Harford’s County Council and General Assembly delegation are looking to a series of joint work sessions to air their differences and perhaps find a better way to address issues facing the county.
“We are all working for the same county,” said Councilman Dion F. Guthrie, an Edgewood Democrat.
The sessions, which will begin July 24 at the council offices in Bel Air, are a first, said council President Billy Boniface, who arranged the meetings. If officials can discuss legislative priorities and what they would like to accomplish in Annapolis before the 2008 legislative session, maybe they can avoid the acrimony and disappointment that have occurred in the past, he said.
…You can read the rest of the article by clicking on the title, which is a link to the article in its entirety. It also states that there will be a public hearing on June 12th about the elected school board issue, which is a hot topic right now. So even though the Generel Assembly isn’t in session right now, keep writing letters to your state delegates and senators; it’s always important to let them know what you think, especially when it comes to county issues.

Upcoming events
Posted by Annie on April 29, 2007
There are two events coming up that people of the Democratic persuasion in Harford County should be aware of…
The first is A Salute to Maryland & Harford County Democratic Leaders on Sunday, May 6th, 2:00 to 5:00. The New Harford Democratic Club is holding this gala in recognition of the Democratic victories in this past election. It will be at the Bel Air Armory, at 37 N. Main Street, and many notable Maryland Democratic politicians will be there. Tickets are $40 and there will be a cash bar, staffed by (and a fundraiser for) the Harford County Young Democrats!
The second event is the monthly Harford County Young Democrats Meetup on Wednesday, May 16th. The meeting will begin at 6:30 on the second floor of Sean Bolan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant,
12 S. Main Street in Bel Air. Our meetings are always on the third Wednesday of the month, and it is a great group of people…come join us!
Please comment to this post if you have any questions.

Welcome!
Posted by Annie on March 29, 2007
Harford County Democrats, both young and experienced, now have an online community to share their thoughts, experiences, advice, events, and hopes! There are many of us out there in the county, but we need a new way to connect, despite our busy schedules. This blog is an attempt to connect us and help us realize what strength there is in numbers. I’m hoping this becomes a sounding board for ideas, a calendar of progressive events, a place to just hang out and meet like-minded people, and an impetus to change, starting in Harford County and resonating on the national level. Please let me know if you would like to be added to post to this blog; I want as many people as possible to be participating. Here’s to possibilities!
