“Abortion rates same whether legal or not”

Posted by Annie on November 1, 2007

Ah, abortion.  Whether you consider yourself pro-choice, pro-life, anti-choice, or pro-privacy, this article makes a fascinating point that is worth considering in the abortion debate.

“Abortion rates same whether legal or not”

“Women are just as likely to get an abortion in countries where it is outlawed as they are in countries where it is legal, according to research published Friday.  In a study examining abortion trends from 1995 to 2003, experts also found that abortion rates are virtually equal in rich and poor countries, and that half of all abortions worldwide are unsafe.”

A study done by the Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organization shows that making abortion illegal DOES NOT reduce the number of abortions that take place in a country.  It does however increase the number of unsafe abortions that jeopardize women’s lives.  70,000 women worldwide die every year from unsafe abortions and 5 million are injured, some permanently.  What does reduce the number of abortions?  Increased availability of birth control.  So if Roe v. Wade were to be overturned, it wouldn’t make much of a dent in the number of abortions in this country, but it would increase the number of women dying or getting hurt.

And in my opinion, if you consider yourself “pro-life,” you should also be opposed to the death penalty and supportive of universal health care, Social Security, and a living wage.  It seems that many people who are pro-life are opposed to these ideas that would help support a person throughout his or her life.  It’s as if once a child is born, the “pro-life” fight is over and that child is on their own.
